My family has always been a project-oriented family – homemade Christmas presents, bird houses, clothes, furniture, canned food – you name it, we made it. Dad would sketch on a napkin over Saturday morning coffee cake and we were off to the lumberyard to get supplies.

I knew in 7th grade that I wanted to be an architect. Actually, I knew that I loved shop class–drafting especially–and my parents encouraged me to look at careers that would build on those interests. Perry often says that if you like something, you are probably good at it.

Herbert Muschamp, a writer for the New York Times, pointed out that just as sports fans would have a difficult time recognizing a truly outstanding performance without a world record to compare it to, communities would have a difficult time knowing why they are important without local landmarks to distinguish them from others.
