Dizzy Mule

Intent

The design intent for Dizzy Mule was rooted in embracing contradiction. From the beginning, the project asked how a building could feel both established and new, industrial and residential, composed yet slightly unpredictable. Rather than resolve those tensions, the design team chose to highlight them.

The historic Radford Co. warehouse set the tone. Its brick masonry, arched window openings, heavy timber columns, and weathered surfaces carried an authenticity that could not be replicated. Preserving those elements was not simply a nod to context, but a foundation for the entire experience of the building. New construction was introduced with clarity and restraint, expressed in contemporary materials and detailing that distinguish it from the original structure while respecting its scale and rhythm. Old and new sit side by side without imitation.

Dizzy Mule ultimately reflects the ongoing evolution of the Millwork District. It preserves what matters, adds what is necessary, and allows the building’s history and future to coexist. The design does not attempt to smooth over time. It gives it room to show.
