The Rose

100 Years of Theater
and Transformations

After changing uses and sitting vacant for over a decade, APMA was enlisted to facilitate the grand building’s restoration in 1991. Renovation work included the repair of decorative plaster; construction of new classrooms and administrative support spaces; and bringing the facility up to current building codes, including handicap accessibility and the replacement of 65-year-old mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and stage-rigging systems.

Scope of work
Renovation + Master Planning

Opened in 1927 as The Riviera, The Rose Theater is one of a few buildings left in the Midwest featuring a unique combination of Moorish and Classical architecture.

All of the restoration work respected the original intent and spirit of architect John Eberson’s original design.

Nearly 30 years after the original renovation, APMA is once again working with The Rose Theater on a master planning effort that aims to project future opportunities and needs 10 years out. The Plan will inventory existing conditions including space programming, building condition, acoustics, lighting, A/V, and MEP systems. Spaces for consideration to be added include two new classrooms, a black box stage with seating for 150, a green room, changing rooms with restrooms, and a full electrified grid, lobby/queuing space, new scene shop, and lighting lab.
