UNL Student Union

New Home Away From Home

In 2018 APMA was hired to develop a master plan for the renovation of the Nebraska Union at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Driven by feedback from students who wanted a space that felt like a “home away from home”, the aspirations for this space were varied; from creating increased opportunity for social interaction through the design of informal lounge and recreation spaces, to identifying various types of study spaces for individual students and groups.

“The team at Alley Poyner Macchietto is creative, innovative, and skilled architects and designers that produced an end product that far exceeded the original vision and will meet the need of the student for years to come. This was accomplished through a commitment to understanding the dynamics and interworking of a complex project and a true passion for connecting with the students, patrons and our organization.”

Ryan Lahne, Ed.D.
Director, Nebraska Unions

To better understand the needs and opportunities, the team conducted a series of surveys, listening sessions and design charrettes with administrators, students, building staff, and partners that currently use the Union for events and special occasions. The end result is a plan for a dynamic new space designed to be a beacon for the campus and offer better connections to the adjacent buildings.

June 1, 2020

For 30 years, APMA has had the pleasure of working with Martin Kluck. Martin is not only one heck of an architect, but a true friend and role model. It shows in the relationships he has built and nurtured over the years. Martin has made a lasting impression in our hearts and on the landscape of Omaha and Iowa. Congratulations, Martin!
