After changing uses and sitting vacant for over a decade, APMA was enlisted to facilitate the grand building’s restoration in 1991. Renovation work included the repair of decorative plaster; construction of new classrooms and administrative support spaces; and bringing the facility up to current building codes, including handicap accessibility and the replacement of 65-year-old mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and stage-rigging systems.

APMA worked with UNMC, Olsson and Associates, and artist Jun Kankeo to envision and create this new “campus gateway” honoring Dr. Larisa Poluetktova – a long-time employee. 18 hand painted columnar monoliths follow a curving path connecting busy Leavenworth St. to the campus interior. New landscaping complements the forms and creates an opportunity for rest, reprieve and contemplation.

APMA is working with Black Dog Development to master plan and design Millwork Commons, a dynamic new neighborhood in North Downtown Omaha. With a five to ten year timeline, the multi-phased project includes the renovation of historically significant structures, the construction of new mixed-use buildings, and the development of multi-modal transportation infrastructure (pedestrians, bikes, buses and cars). The district will host a variety of uses, including office, retail, residential, that focus on providing access points to all demographics. To achieve an active neighborhood, the design of the spaces between buildings is critical, and as such, the district will feature a series of park and plaza spaces, anchored by a community green, that will encourage interaction between visitors and residents alike and will host an array of cultural programming opportunities.

In 2018 APMA was hired to develop a master plan for the renovation of the Nebraska Union at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Driven by feedback from students who wanted a space that felt like a “home away from home”, the aspirations for this space were varied; from creating increased opportunity for social interaction through the design of informal lounge and recreation spaces, to identifying various types of study spaces for individual students and groups.

Built on the former site of Pleasantview Homes, a 300-unit public housing site in North Omaha, Highlander has been a catalyst for revitalization of this historically under-served neighborhood. The new development sits on 23 acres straddling 30th Street, a major north-south corridor. In the 1970’s a large portion of the neighborhood was demolished to construct Highway 75. Since 2014 Seventy Five North Revitalization Corp. and its partners have constructed 101 mixed-income housing units in a modern, contextually-urban neighborhood in an effort to reverse the effects of this disinvestment. Focused on supporting extended families and children, phase one included a multifamily courtyard apartment building, townhomes, and multi-generational housing, providing a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units.
