After designing the master plan for the new Millwork Commons neighborhood, APMA began work on the transformation of the historic Ashton building into a mixed-use hub for north downtown. The renovated building commemorates the history of the former window factory while celebrating the energy of its new use. Constructed of heavy timber and load-bearing masonry the building had developed a rich patina throughout its lifetime.
Location
Omaha, NE
Size

Scope of Work
Renovation + Addition
Date of Completion
December 2020
With over an acre of space on each of its four floors how to identify the Ashton’s front door for pedestrians and visitors was a challenge. A new entry portico on the north side helps make it obvious and enhanced streetscapes adds human scale improvements.
New elements were intentionally designed to contrast the existing materials, offering a strong counterpoint that emphasizes the beauty of both new and old. A community space, nicknamed The Dock, bisects the ground floor, and provides opportunities for gathering, retail, and building amenities and services.
